What is Elon Mode?
So, I came across this article right before the year ended. I wanted it to be the first thing we got here to kick the new year off because it is interesting to find out what "Elon mode" is. Also, with the right team and equipment, it is revealing how easily Tesla systems could be hacked. Also, there is a foreshadowed event that Will Smith had already dealt with years back. No, it's not about slapping. We'll get to it very soon. What does Will Smith have to do with Elon Mode and Teslas? You'll see me once when we get there.
Now, without further ado, let's talk about what the three students from Berlin discovered. Nicholas Kuhnapfel, Christian Werling, and Hans-niklas Jacob found a massive exploit with Tesla's autopilot by finding an easy way in. While they were in the system, they discovered what's called "Elon mode." The three students came equipped with 600 euros' worth of tools to crack into the system, which raises significant concerns about Tesla's safety. The article says the students didn't use super complicated codes.
Elon mode was discovered while the three students were in the system, and by my understanding, Elon mode is equivalent to what is considered God Mode cheat in all of the classic games. Elon Mode, which was activated in the summer by another hacker, allows the car to "operate autonomously without the constant requirement for hands on the steering wheel" (The Tesla Autopilot Hacker Group unveils the "Elon Mode" 2023)
The article then goes on to say the concern of replication of the autopilot by competitors might spell trouble for Tesla and minimal risk to the individual owners. This is just my small thought on that. While yes, it requires physical access to the circuit board to activate god mode in the Teslas, it puts my mind at ease for a slight second. If it's easily crackable for there to be a mode that allows the car to go about its day without the touch of the steering wheel, who is to say that a malicious individual cracks the access of the system and turns that "minimal threat" into an actual problem.
Remember earlier when I said that little bit about Will Smith being a part of this? Well, now it's his time to shine. Do you guys remember the movie I Robot? In this film which came out on July 16th of 2004, Will Smith lives in a world where AI robots and humans coexist in physical everyday life. Shortly in the film, the robots begin turning on humans to take over the world. Will Smith with the assistance of a scientist and a friendly robot, has to fend for themselves against the bots. Well, that is slowly starting to become a possible situation at the Giga Tesla factory in Texas: "A robot meant for handling car parts turned on its human co-worker, putting an engineer in a life-threatening situation" (The Tesla Autopilot Hacker Group unveils the "Elon Mode" 2023) the machine was programmed to work with the freshly cut aluminum and went after the person that programmed it and other robots. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you, right? That is honestly wild to even fathom. One day, you are programming a machine to handle car parts. The next thing you know, you are getting attacked and injured by the very thing that you programmed.
